EDUCATION

Prof. Steven Vargas is a neurologist, trained in Neuromuscular diseases at the Institut de Myologie, Centre de Référence de Maladies Rares Paris-Est, France, and in Neurology at the National Institute of Neurology and Neurosurgery in Mexico City.

EXPERIENCE

Prof. Steven Vargas is Director of the clinical neuromuscular fellowship programme, Coordinator of the Nerve and Muscle clinic for outpatients, Neurologist at the Department of Neurology, and Associate Professor of the adult neurology residency programme at the National Institute of Neurology and Neurosurgery in Mexico City.

AREAS OF INTEREST

Prof. Steven Vargas' research includes physiopathology and treatment of immuno-mediated neuromuscular diseases, with a focus in acute and chronic autoimmune neuropathies, myasthenia gravis and inflammatory myopathies, alongside motor neuron diseases, mainly Amyotrophic Lateral Scleroses (ALS).

RESEARCH OVERVIEW

Prof. Steven Vargas focuses his research on biomarkers and treatment of the axonal variant of Guillain-Barre Syndrome, new therapeutic strategies in immuno-mediated neuromuscular diseases and optimizing IVIg therapy in acute immune neuropathies. Another area of interest is early diagnosis of ALS based on histopathology features.
